Hi, I am a primary teacher in Scotland and currently I work with learners with severe and complex additional support needs in both the primary and secondary settings. I recognise the need for good quality resources, unfortunately these are not always available to suit the needs of my visual learners who require that extra support and those that I do find often need to be adapted to meet my learners needs. I hope that you find them as useful in your classrooms as I have found them in mine.

This resource is very useful when laminated to sit on the pupils desks to support them completing independent literacy and numeracy activity tasks. It features the alphabet (with vowels colour coded) number line to 20 (odd & even) colour coded, 100 square, common colour and 2d shape names.

Days of the Week Activity Pack

This 18 page pupil resource pack includes flashcards, display cards, word-search, overwriting worksheets and a sequencing and letter match activity board. The visuals that are used are from the popular PCS Boardmaker Symbols pack by Mayer-Johnson. Educators working with pupils with ASN will be familiar with these symbols as they are clear and consistent enabling easy recognition for pupils. Each worksheet is clear and uncluttered for focused learning, pupil can work independently on the matching activities or as a group. I have used this task as an introduction to sequencing the days of the week, I have the flashcards up on the wall as an interactive activity. I have laminated each of the worksheets for the pupils to complete in their morning boxes as part of their daily routine and also as consolidation homework tasks. Symbolic communication/news boards

This differentiated resource has been created for learners with communication or learning difficulties to enable them to share their news with their peers. I use this every morning in my class with learners who have a range of ASD and learning difficulties as a settling task sorting the day of the week, the weather and how they are feeling. They then choose from a range of symbols to represent what they either did the night before or are going to do that day. It is a great supporting tool to encourage and promote communication, talking and listening skills. There are 3 differentiated boards that range from symbol matching, emergent writing and independent writing. In my class I found it most useful to bind the symbols and boards so that they open like a book, I copied the symbols and cut them before mounting them onto the base board with Velcro, pupils can then move them onto their own board.

What Am I Looking For? Behaviour Flashcards

These interactive and visually stimulating flashcards can be used to remind pupils of appropriate classroom behaviour. The visuals used are PCS Boardmaker symbols used with permission from Mayer Johnson. Professionals working with ASN pupils will be familiar with these clear and easy recognisable images that support pupil communication and comprehension. I use these flashcards at the start of the lesson to remind pupils of the core skills that I will be looking for i.e. good listening, good sitting etc. I then have them on the board or wall to remind pupils throughout the activity. I have enlarged them as a permanent wall display and also condensed them and put them on a keyring for some pupils to carry with them throughout the school day. I have also included a checklist for more able pupils to self/partner evaluate class behaviours. The Picture Communication Symbols ©1981–2010 by Mayer-Johnson LLC. All Rights Reserved Worldwide.
